Make Plans For The Aged In The Country NGO Advises FG

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the founder of NGO, Dr.
Emem Okokaro, revealed that the population of Nigerians
above the age of 60 years is ex-pected to hit 30 million by
the year 2050, with a global figure projected at two billion
for the same year.
She regretted what he called the absence of clear cut health
and welfare policies for the nation’s aged population,
adding that only four percent of this category of Ni¬gerians
is covered by the existing pension scheme, owing to the
informal nature of the economic system.
Okokaro explained that more than 90 percent of the aged
are in the rural areas and they usually sink into abject
poverty and want immediately they lose the strength to earn
a living.
She, however, called on government and other stakeholders
to develop political, economic and social reforms needed to
adapt to an ageing world.
She canvassed dignity, and security for the aged and
opportunities for them to enjoy access to essential social
and healthcare facilities and minimum income through the
implementation of national so¬cial protection floors.
Dr. Omokaro disclosed that the Foundation, in collaboration
with a coalition of civil society organisations, was already
working on a Bill for the ageing population and that the Bill
would be sent to the National Assembly any time soon.

End Violence Against Children; UNICEF Crys Out

To mark the last  Children’s Day celebration, thousands of people
from all over Nigeria marched to shine a spotlight on
the plight of the millions of children who suffer violence
every year in Nigeria, calling on communities to break
the culture of silence. The Nigeria Violence Against Children Survey (carried
out by the National Population Commission, with the
support of UNICEF and US Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention), launched by Government of Nigeria in
September 2015, highlighted the prevalence of sexual,
physical, and emotional violence suffered by children in
Nigeria.
The survey estimates that half of all children in Nigeria
experience physical violence, one in four girls and one
in ten boys experience sexual violence and one in six
girls and one in five boys experience emotional
violence before they reach the age of 18 years.
The majority of children never tell anyone what has
happened to them. Less than 4% get the help they need
to recover.
“This culture of silence must be broken”, said
Oluwadamilola Apotieri-Abdulai, Convener of the
iMarch4Children and Executive Director of Playback
Nigeria.
“At the launch of the Presidential Year of Action to End
Violence Against Children on 15th September 2015, His
Excellency President Buhari called upon every Nigerian
to play their part to END VIOLENCE AGAINST
CHILDREN in Nigeria.

#iMarch4Children is our response to raise social
awareness of this acute problem facing millions of
children and to mobilize communities to take action”.
Playback Nigeria, with the support of UNICEF, has
partnered with Civil Society Organizations across 12
Nigeria states and the FCT to march for children.
The #iMarch4Children art-based project took
place in Lagos, Kaduna, Gombe, Cross River, Plateau,
Ebonyi, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Delta, Rivers State,
Kebbi State and Abuja on the 27th of May 2016 by 8am,
bringing together children and young people of different
age groups and backgrounds, religious and cultural
leaders, the general public, celebrities and public
figures who have been identified as #iMarch4Children
Ambassadors.

All participants were dressed in a way that depicts the
impact of violence against children, in order to shed a
light on the silent suffering of millions of Nigerian
children.

A communique was delivered to the Government
in each state and at the Federal level on behalf of the
CSOs after which a Die-In activity was conducted,
a process which involved participants to lay on their
back to reflect on millions of children that have died as
a result of violence against children.

A daily tweet-meet was launched on social media
with different stakeholders tweeting on issues related
to VAC on the official social media platform for the
march and campaign @iMarch4Children and
@end_vac.
“No one Ministry or Organization can effectively
address violence against children alone”, said Jean
Gough, Representative UNICEF Nigeria, “Violence
against children can only be ended through a united
and concerted effort by Government, CSOs, religious
and traditional leaders, the media, communities and
families”.

The nation-wide #iMarch4Children was anchored
by Playback Nigeria, with support from UNICEF as part
of the Year of Action to End Violence Against Children.
Implementing partners across states include media

Albino Foundation To FGN Give Us Genuine Free Education

the Albino
Foundation has called on the federal Government to
provide genuine free education and free health care
delivery for every Nigerian child.
The President of the Foundation, Jake Epelle who made
the call in an interview with Kapital FM in Abuja called
on the Government to fully implement the Child Right
Act.
Speaking on this year’s theme “Conflicts and Crisis in
Africa; Protecting all Children’s Right”, Mr Epelle said
all hands need to be on deck in advocacy and
sensitizing the public on the Child Right Act to protect
the right of the Nigerian Child.
“The child needs to be properly
sensitized, the Parents need to be
properly sensitized, the society
needs to be properly sensitized on
the rights and privileges of the child
and what should be done and can be
done interns of crisis and conflicts
moments. The child Right Act is very
good but it is not fully implemented,
the member states should implement
the Act and take precaution
measures in safe guarding the right
of the African Child,”he said.
He called on all concerned stakeholders to come up
with a holistic approach in solving the problem of child
labour, which he said is a major problem that needs an
urgent approach.
Speaking on some of the challenges faced by an albino
child to include, health hazard(skin cancer),
stigmatization, lack of education, parental challenges
and low political will on the side of the government to
look into their challenges, Epelle said the Foundation
will continue to partner the government, stakeholders
and the media in protecting the right of every Albino
child in the country.
The Day of the African Child is celebrated every year
since 1991, when it was first initiated by the
Organisation of African Unity.
It honours those who participated in the Soweto
Uprising in 1976 on that day and raises awareness of
the continuing need for improvement of the education
provided to African children.

2-Year-Old Boy Dragged Into Water By Aligator Has Been Found

Following the incident which took place on Tuesday
night, Orange County dive team found Lane Graves’
body intact about 1:45 p.m., not far from where he was
grabbed said Sheriff Jerry Demings  “Of course, the autopsy has to confirm that, but there is likely no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligator,” Demings said. Demings said.
He said the body was found in 6 feet of murky water 10
to 15 yards from where the boy was attacked.
The fact that the body was found intact makes sense,
said Jeff Corwin, host of “Ocean Mysteries” on ABC.
Authorities Search For Boy Dragged Away By Alligator

That gator came in, grabbed that
boy, pulled him, the dad startled that
gator, the gator let him go and then
the boy drowned,” he said.
Alligators don’t swim that far — they sink into the
murky water and lurk there — which explains why the
father did not see the boy when he jumped into the
water to try and save him, Corwin said.
The boy’s parents are from Elkhorn, Nebraska, and
were identified as Matt and Melissa Graves.
“The Graves family appreciates the support they have
received and have asked for privacy as they grieve the
loss of their son,” the sheriff’s department tweeted.

2-Year-Old Boy Dragged Into Water By Alligator

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings, in a news
conference said the family of five from Nebraska was
on vacation and wading in a lake Tuesday evening
when the attack happened. The father tried to rescue
his son but was unsuccessful.
Authorities were searching early Wednesday for the boy. More than 50 law enforcement personnel were
searching the Seven Seas Lagoon along with an
alligator tracker and two marine units and would
continue searching through the night, Demings said.
“We’re going to hope for the best in these
circumstances,” Demings said.
The attack happened in an area of the Seven Seas
Lagoon where “no swimming” signs were posted,
Demings said. The alligator was estimated to be 4 to 7
feet long, but its exact size was not known, Demings
said.

at the resort was devastated by what happened and
Disney is helping the family.
When asked if Disney was aware of alligators on the
property, Wahaler said there were signs that said “no
swimming.”

similar alligator attacks on the lake.

in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, when about
1.am on Tuesday ,armed men numbering about 12
stormed a street where the Chief Palace Guest House is
located killing two people and  injuring many others .
Some of the residents who spoke with Kapital FM said
they heard some dogs barking endlessly on the street
trying to alert the people of the ugly incidence
happening in the area.
According to one of the women who chose to be
anonymous, her husband had wanted coming out to
check but she had to prevent him because shortly
before the robbers came there was power failure and
every where was dark.
One of  those killed happens to be their security man,
his name is Abubakar but he was popularly called
‘Colly’. He was matcheted and stoned to death right in
front of a small shop which he owned just in front of
their house.
The two security men were brutally murdered and their corpses were dragged in to the
bush close to the houses were the robbers
eventually operated.
One of the victims Mr. Audu Onah whose house was
burgled said;
” I heard a knock at my door at about 1.30am and I
asked who was that? The voice said come and open the
door, but before I could move my family to a secured
room, they had used a massive stone to pull out the
burglary of my window, gained entrance into my house
and opened the main door”.
Mr Onah said immediately they came into his house
armed with matchets, knifes and local pistols, they
pounced on him giving him a deep cut on the forehead
and wounded his mouth.
He explained that the armed men robbed all 6 houses in
his compound making away with laptops, phones, ATM
cards, money and other valuables.

his head and cotton wool in his mouth which prevented
him from speaking properly.

robbery operation but unfortunately there was no
prompt response from them.”

ensure the culprits are brought before the law and
prosecuted accordingly, appeal to the Federal
Government to mount street lights to disperse these
bad people during the night.

Baby Born With Sealed Anus In Plateau State

A baby boy with this condition  has been born in
Pankshin LGA, Plateau state.
Sources say he was born on the 30th of April. His
mother reportedly noticed that her baby’s tummy kept
swelling up so she rushed him to the town hospital in
Pankshin. They were referred to Plateau state
Specialist Hospital where doctors discovered that the baby had Imperforate Anus meaning the
baby’s anus was sealed and that he cannot
defecate.
Imperforate anus is a birth defect that happens while
your baby is still growing. This defect means that your
baby has an improperly developed anus. According to
the Cincinnati Childrens Hospital, about 1 out of every
5,000 babies
has an imperforate anus. It occurs more
often in boys than girls. The rectum, bladder, and
vagina of a female baby with an imperforate anus
typically share one large opening. This opening is
called a cloaca.
The president of Plateau state hospital Dr. Philemon
Golwa said the poor boy needs surgery, one his equally
poor parents can’t afford.
This is a very serious condition that requires immediate
treatment. Most babies will need surgery to repair the
defect. The outlook following surgery is very positive.

Teachers Recruitment Portal Crash In Just One Day

The federal government’s social empowerment
program to recruit 500,000 teachers may have run into
a hitch as the website for the exercise crashed on
Sunday, the first day applications were opened.
Heavy traffic due to massive applications by
prospective candidates is easily adjudged to be the
reason for the crash.
The Federal Government had, last week, announced
that the recruitment of the teachers would commence
on Sunday, directing interested Nigerians to apply
through http://portal.npower.gov.ng
Attempts to register on the portal around 6.48pm on
Sunday failed as the website was not available.
A message was displayed: “ An error occurred. Sorry,
the page you are looking for is currently unavailable.
Please, try again later. If you are the system
administrator of this resource, then you should check
the error log for details. Faithfully yours, nginx .”
However the portal seems to be fine on Monday
morning.

FG Invest N500 billion On Employment Of Graduates

The Federal Government on Wednesday announced the
commencement of recruitment of 500,000 unemployed
graduates to benefit from the N500 billion social
investment Programme included in the 2016 Budget.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant
on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, says the
applications will start via online for positions in
the 500,000 direct teacher jobs scheme, through an
internet portal named npower.gov.ng.
It said that the applications were expected to start
coming in on June 12, as the portal would formally be
launched on Saturday, June 11.
Qualified young unemployed Nigerians were therefore
urged to visit the website and apply
It reads: “It would be recalled that President
Muhammadu Buhari in his May 29th Democracy Day
broadcast to the nation formally launched the
unprecedented social investment programmes already
provided for under the 2016 Appropriation by the
administration.
“The 500,000 Teacher Corps, nicknamed N-Power
Teach on the portal, is one of the three direct job
creation and training schemes Nigerians can start
applying for from Sunday, June 12.
“Others are N-Power Knowledge which will train
25,000 Nigerians in the area of technology, and N-
Power Build, which train another 75,000 in the areas of
building services, construction, utilities, hospitality and
catering, automotive vocations, aluminium and gas
services.
“All trainees would be paid for the duration of their
training. The N-Power Teacher Corps initiative which
will engage and train 500,000 young unemployed
graduates is a paid volunteer programme of a 2-year
duration.
“Unemployed Nigerians selected and trained will play
teaching, instructional, and advisory roles in primary,
and secondary schools, agricultural extension systems
across the country, public health and community
education-covering civic and adult education.
“Besides their monthly take home pay estimated at
about N23, 000, the selected 500,000 graduates will
also get computer devices that will contain information
necessary for their specific engagement, as well as
information for their continuous training and
development. They get to keep the devices even after
exiting from the programme.
“According to the plan of the Buhari administration, the
N-Power Teacher Corps programme is an invaluable
opportunity for young Nigerians to make immense
economic and social contributions to the nation while
developing their skills. It will also help to address the
problems of inadequate teachers in public schools.
“Also, persons enlisted under the scheme will gain
work experience and acquire key competencies through
academic and non-academic capacity building
programmes intended to improve their competitiveness
in the workplace. Their devices will come loaded with
knowledge-oriented applications and software that will
enable them acquire the skills and capacity.
“Under the N-Power Knowledge scheme, there are
three aspects: Creative, Technology Software and

“The N-Power Knowledge scheme also has a
technology category in two aspects: hardware and
software. 10,000 Nigerians would be trained, and
equipped in the area of software development,
including web designers, and another 10,000 in
hardware expertise including to repair, maintain and
assemble mobile phones, tablets, computers and other
devices.
“Also the N-Power Build category was
designed realizing that the presence of a well-trained
and highly skilled youth population in any economy has
direct impact on entrepreneurship/wealth creation,
which in turn leads to a decline in unemployment.
‘N-Power Build is therefore an accelerated training and
certification (Skills to Job/Enterprise) programme that
will engage and train 75,000 young unemployed
Nigerians in order to build a new crop of skilled and
highly competent workforce of technicians, artisans
and service professionals.” it stated
On other schemes, the statement said: “The other
schemes in the Buhari presidency Social Investment
Programmes which would soon be rolled out in the
coming weeks. These include the Conditional Cash
Transfer that pays N5000 monthly to one million
Nigerians, the Micro-Credit Scheme for more than 1.5
million Nigerians, the Home Grown School Feeding
programme that will serve 5.5 million Nigerian pupils

Implement National Values In schools; House Of Rep.

The House of Representatives has raised concern over the
wrong implementation of the recent revised basic education
curriculum (BEC) recently launched by the National
Education Research Development Council (NERDC) by some
schools.
In view of this, it mandated its committee on Basic
Education and Services to interface with NERC,
stakeholders and relevant schools for proper explanation on
the implementation of the subject, Religion and National
Values (RNV).
This is sequel to a motion on the need to revisit the BEC
curriculum sponsored by Hon. Rita Orji who noted that the
BEC currently comprises 20 subjects which include religion
and national values.
The Lawmaker stated that under the scheme, Islamic
Studies and Christian Religious Studies are meant to be
taught separately depending on a pupil’s religious
inclination but however informed the House that the
curriculum is being implemented wrongly by some schools
as is the case in Ajeromi /Ifelogun Federal Constituency of
Lagos State, where both subjects under RVN have been
merged.
The House expressed concern that the given the sensitive
nature of the matter, imposition of both subjects on either
side, will have grave consequences that could impair the
stability of Nigeria.

Woman Sets Daughter Ablaze And Calls It Honour Killing

A Pakistani mother has been arrested on suspicion of
burning her 16-year-old daughter alive for marrying
without family consent in the latest so-called “honour
killing” to shock the country.
Zeenat Rafiq , 17-year-old Pakistani lady ran away
from her family and got married against the will of her
family to a young man, Hassaid Khan . Zeenat
was tricked into returning home by her mother with the
promise of organising for them a proper wedding
ceremony.
The unsuspecting girl was doused with petrol and set
on fire by her mother, Perveen, in a neighbourhood of
Lahore.
The mother reportedly made no attempt to hide her
crime, shouting to neighbours that she had killed her
daughter for supposedly dishonouring her family.
Zeenat ran away with and married Hassan last week,
angering her Punjabi family who were furious that she
had married an ethnic Pashtun without permission.
In a television interview with Geo News, Khan said,
“After living with me for four days following our
marriage, her family contacted us and promised they
would throw us a proper wedding party after eight
days”.
“Zeenat was unwilling to go back to her home and told
me that she would be killed by her family, but later
agreed when one of her uncles guaranteed her safety”.
“After two days, she called me and said that her family
had gone back on their word and asked me to come to
get her, but I told her to wait for the promised eight
days. Then she was killed.”
Lahore police arrested Zeenat’s mother and said they
were looking for her brother, who had recently flown in
from Dubai.
Perveen’s younger sister Naseem told AFP: “After
killing her daughter,
Perveen went out on the street,
took off her shawl and started beating herself on her
chest, shouting: ‘People! I have killed my daughter for
misbehaving and giving our family a bad name.'”
“My sister declared a long time ago she would not
allow her daughter to marry a Pashtun,” she said.
The case has attracted the interest of Shahbaz Sharif,
the chief minister of Punjab. In February Sharif’s
brother, the prime minister Nawaz Sharif, pledged to
close a loophole under Islamic law that allows many
perpetrators of so-called “honour” killings to go free.
Under current laws family members are allowed to
forgive the killer, forcing prosecutors to drop even the
most watertight case.
It often leads to killers walking free in situations where
entire families agree that a daughter has brought
shame on them.

Scientist: We Can Now Grow Human Organs In Pigs

Scientists have successfully combined human stem
cells and pig DNA – with the aim of growing a human
organ inside a pig.
But critics say the development of such hybrids is
‘offensive to human dignity’.
The ‘chimera’ embryos have been implanted in living
sows and allowed to grow for 28 days before being
tested and destroyed.
A team from the University of California has created a
“genetic niche” in the pigs’ DNA which will allow them
to inject human stem cells into the pig embryos.
The researchers hope the resulting foetus will grow a
pancreas made almost entirely of human cells -
although in the current trials the pregnancies will be
terminated after 28 days.
Reproductive biologist Professor Pablo Ross, who is
leading the research, said: “Our hope is that this pig
embryo will develop normally but the pancreas will be
made almost exclusively out of human cells and could
be compatible with a patient for transplantation.
“We think there is a very low potential for a human
brain to grow.”
Pigs are thought to be an ideal biological incubator for
growing human organs, and could potentially be used
to create not just a pancreas, but hearts, livers, kidneys
lungs and corneas.
He said transplanting such organs to human patients in
need of transplants could be done without the need for
immunosuppressive drugs which can carry significant
side-effects.
The work is controversial and last year the main US
medical research agency imposed a funding limit
because of concerns that the human cells might
migrate to developing the foetal pig’s brain, making the
animal more human.
Britain is currently suffering an acute organ donor
shortage , mainly due to medical advances which are
saving more lives following accidents, and 429 people
died in 2014 waiting for a transplant.
Experts believe the so-called “chimera” technique
being developed in California is likely to be approved by
the Home Office.
But animal rights campaigners are questioning the use
of animals to grow human organs.
Peter Stevenson, from Compassion in World Farming,
said: “I’m nervous about opening up a new source of
animal suffering. Let’s first get many more people to
donate organs.”
